Several times a day we field calls from Phoenix-area homeowners wondering if termites cause small holes in drywall. The quick and easy answer is YES. Termites, especially our native species, can and will cause small holes in drywall. Termites feed on cellulose material like wood, cardboard, and the paper used on the backside of the drywall.

Heterotermes thrive in the Sonoran Desert region of the southwest and are the dominant subterranean species in the greater Phoenix area. This species is small, likes to nest under concrete slabs, and makes entry into homes via expansion joints, plumbing voids, and stress cracks. Their little physical size allows them to invade a home through the smallest of openings.

Termite Pin holes

TermitesMany Phoenix area homes had wood framing and attached drywall sitting on top of these entry points, so it’s not uncommon to see small holes in the drywall near these regions. Professional exterminators refer to these little holes as “termite pin holes.”

Termite pin holes are typically the same size as a small nail hole. One way to distinguish between the two is by the presence of dirt (brown soil). Subterranean termites navigate to and from their nesting area via mud tubes (tunnels). Without the presence of dirt (brown soil) the holes in drywall are not typically related to termites.

If you have, or suspect termites don’t panic. Take a deep breath and call us for a free inspection and evaluation. Even though Arizona is home to 17 different types of these wood-eating insects chances are excellent that they will not destroy your home in a matter of days. Getting a yearly termite inspection is advisable even if you don’t think a problem exists. Given the secret nature of these insects, it often takes an experienced inspector to detect their presence.

If you’re worried about termites getting a yearly inspection from an experienced termite inspector can be the best proactive step to prevent damage. Even if no termites are detected a good inspector can point out conditions around your home that are conducive to future infestation. Correcting these conditions can be enough to keep the critters away for years.
